The Emperor's New Clothes

Tuesday 2 December 2008 to Saturday 17 January 2009

The Emperor's New Clothes, continues unity’s 21 year passion for traditional stories told in an untraditional way and follows the success of Pinocchio and The Tinder Box.

Emperor Bling is a proud and wealthy man but he hasn't got a thing to wear! In his huge palace he has a huge walk in wardrobe full of the finest clothes, he has new clothes every day, in fact he cares more for his clothes than he does his citizens.

His fashion fixation has created a wool shortage so he's raised the sheep shearing tax. The townsfolk are up in arms and he's beginning to get the feeling they don't like him. Even his sweetheart is tiring of his vanity.

In a bid to win them all round he hires two dodgy taylors, Wicked and Wicked, who promise him the finest suit of clothes from the most beautiful cloth.

Will his new threads be bling enough to dazzle them?
Will Wicked and Wicked prove to be a pair of conmen?
Will the audience see right through Emperor Bling's Charms?

Liverpool’s Patrick Dineen, who composed and arranged the score for Liverpool's 2008 Capital of Culture launch on St George's plateau directs and provides the music for this sure fire Christmas treat. The Cast Includes Aiden Lee Brooks and Graham Geoffrey from Random Acts of Wildness who have both appeared in previous unity Christmas shows.

Ragz and Guests

Friday 5 December

Ragz is a singer/sonwriter born and raised in a land coloured by northern lights and fairytale creatures. Hermusic is spellbinding, with acoustic tones weaving intricately with her soul tingling voice.

The songstress is breathing new life into her craft with the rest of us looking on in amazement. A great girl and a fine composer ladies and gentlemen. International Online Music Magazine.

Strawhouses is all about that feeling that we’re living blissfully unaware that we’re on unsteady ground. Built on a forte for intense and emotional live sets, with grippingmelodies and soaring guitars underpinned by inventive and original rhythms and beats.

Gavin Thorpe manages to lift above his contemporaries with a strong vocal performance in addition to memorable guitar lines and pop hooks. An impressive new talent.

Emma Gregory and Jane Spencer

2 January to 31 January 2009

Printmaker Emma Gregory and illustrator Jane Spencer met in Liverpool in 2006. In this exhibition they join forces to trumpet a passion for print.

Emma has worked for the Hayward Gallery, National Theatre, Riverside Studios, among others. She now runs the Bluecoat’s print studio, teaches and makes drawings and prints for a growing audience of collectors, exhibiting widely.

Jane Spencer has worked freelance as an illustrator for clients such as Conde Nast and Harper Thorsons. She creates stylish and simple prints with a strong design flavour. Recently she has been presenting silk-screen workshops to Merseyside schools. This is her first exhibition in Liverpool.

This exhibition features prints created in the period since they met, and includes collographs, woodcuts, screen-prints and etchings.

dark grumblings

Big Wow
in association with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd

dark grumblings

very strange, very fast and very funny

Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 January

Big Wow return with the sell-out show that launched the Unity’s 08 programme. A tower block wheremost of the residents have shipped out before the property developers move in. A couple of security guards working the night shift. A mysterious television channel.

Blatantly influenced by the genre of Japanese horror, Dark Grumblings is a very silly, but, at times, genuinely scary experience.

Big Wow were winners of Best New Comedy Play Edinburgh 2006 with Insomnobabble, and we’d love to be able to tell you we’d had another huge Festival success, and sold loads of tickets, and got tons of great reviews, and picked up a few awards along the way, but we can’t as we’re writing this in the middle of June.

Very fast, very funny, and very strange. Daily Post
Shows you what theatre can do that no other medium can ... Comic genius. The Stage
