Horse & Bamboo
Little Leap Forward
8+
Duration: 65 minutes
Friday 10 July
Set in the summer of 1966 as Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution intensifies, Little Leap Forward is the story of Guo Yue’s childhood in Beijing with his mother, brother, and four older sisters. Much of his life is taken up with running family errands and going to school, but whenever he can he follows his twin loves of playing the flute and flying kites. With his best friend, he captures a small yellow bird which he keeps in a cage, hoping she will accompany his flute playing.
By the end of the story Little Leap Forward’s mother has been arrested, his friends are forced out of the city, and he learns that the bird must be free if it is to sing. Guo Yue is now based in the UK and is an internationally acclaimed bamboo flute player. Little Leap Forward is the story about family, friendships and
creative expression, but above all about the needs for freedom. Directed by Alison Duddle, with set design by Bob Frith, Horse+ Bamboo’s artistry combines mask, puppetry, shadows and animation with original music by Loz Kaye.
The music also includes the distinctive flute playing of Guo Yue [recorded].Little Leap Forward is Horse + Bamboo’s second show for family audiences following the success of the award-winning In The Shadow of Trees and has been developed as a creative partnership with Barefoot Books Ltd and The Studio, Royal Exchange Theatre.
Written and directed by Alison Duddle.
Based on the original story Little Leap Forward co-written by Guo Yue and Clare Farrow, [text copyright 2008] and published by Barefoot Books

Wide Eyes Theatre
Topophilia
for 5-7 years
Saturday 11 July
Meaning ‘a love of place’, Topophilia promises to transport the audience into the realms of memory, imagination and childhood play. The ordinary becomes extraordinary and make-believe becomes reality as a kaleidoscopic world is created. Childhood imagination is playfully beckoned by three performers using a delightful mix of movement, comedy and a whole rainbow of colours. This visually dynamic production is brought to you by a group of emerging Liverpool artists who debuted the piece at Novas Contemporary Urban Centre in July 2008, with support from Hope Street Ltd. It has since been developed to tour at an International Children’s Theatre Festival in Turkey earlier this year and Wide
Eyes Theatre now return to Liverpool for this one-off presentation of Topophilia; a performance for children and their adults.
The group will also be running a Topophilia themed workshop for children on the unity Splatterdays! programme.
