Liverpool’s Unity Theatre is looking for new trustees to join our Board who share our passion for theatre and will help us to continue championing new artists and create stunning theatre.

Unity Theatre has a proud history of radical theatre, brilliant stories and diverse programming dating back to the early twentieth century. This dedication to creating and showcasing outstanding work guides Unity in all that we do.

As we move into an exciting new chapter in 2024, it is the perfect time to welcome new trustees to continue this brilliant legacy, while also breathing new life into the organisation, and working closely with the new Artistic Director to strategically support Unity’s future.

Trustees play an invaluable part in leading the organisation and setting the strategy and future ambitions of the theatre. We are looking to recruit up to four new trustees to add to the talent and dedication of our existing board.

We are particularly looking for trustees with in-depth experience of one or some of the following area:

Strategic thinking and organisational planning over the long term
Leadership and management in the performing arts sector
Fundraising and income generation
Artists with a track record of presenting exceptional, thought-provoking work.
Financial management within constraints
Leading a board of trustees as Chair, as the current chair of the board is due to retire soon.

Unity welcomes applications from all members of the community with the ability to make effective contributions to the Board. You will bring strong insight and professional experience in your area of specialism, along with a willingness to share thoughts, challenge ideas and support the team at all levels of the organisation. Previous experience of being a Trustee is not a requirement. A passion for the arts and their role within a community is essential.

This role is voluntary with a commitment to attend four Board meetings a year, plus relevant sub-committees and regular performances and events. Appointments are for an initial period of three years, with the option of standing for an additional three-year term.

If you would like to apply, please send a CV and covering letter to Matthew Brown, Interim CEO, matthewbrown@unitytheatre.co.uk by Monday 6th May.

If you would like to talk about the role and exactly what is involved, please contact Matthew to arrange a conversation.

ABOUT UNITY THEATRE

Since the 1930s, Unity has artistically challenged the status quo, and to this day we remain an organisation that interrogates society and humanity through our diverse programming.

The productions and events we curate are designed to speak directly to the communities around us, as we strive to connect curious audiences with brilliant new interdisciplinary work. We support creatives who break artistic boundaries, by bringing high-profile artists to Liverpool audiences and promoting home-grown artists nationwide through our touring activity. All our work is underpinned by a holistic and wide-reaching engagement programme that champions and gives a voice to Liverpool communities, breaking down barriers in one of the world’s most exciting cities to live, work and play.

Unity Theatre is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity managed by a Board of Trustees, currently comprising seven members. Day to day the organisation is run by a team of seven staff, alongside a pool of casual staff, freelancers and volunteers. Unity is funded and supported by Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, alongside other generous individuals and organisations.
