Martha, Me and My Family - Unity Theatre

Martha, Me and My Family

Friday 10th February

Unity 1

Part of the Unity Open Call Programme

Martha, Me and My Family is the story of wannabe star Saphena who, at the age 17 is invited to sing backing vocals with Motown icon Martha Reeves.

The story weaves in tales of ancestors and the British colonial legacy in a funny and poignant play.

Drawing on her Guyanese and Indian heritage this autobiographical one-woman show, written and performed by Saphena Aziz, explores family, legacy and friendship.

About The Artist:

Saphena Aziz is a creative powerhouse.  She is an independent theatre producer helping develop the work of new and emerging writers.  Her day job is Director of Inclusion for arts and education charity Curious Minds.   She is a member of the Diversity Action Group with the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, has worked with Black British Theatre companies Eclipse and Tamasha and advises arts organisations on how to develop anti-racist strategies.

As a creative consultant she works with many artists, writing funding bids, developing shows or just being at the other end of the phone to talk through ideas.

As a performer and writer herself she has produced work for TV, film and stage and continues to develop her own creative practice whilst helping others to do the same.
