Brick | Up Next Festival 26
Saturday 28th March
4pm
Brick is set over the course of one night in the holding cell of a police station, and follows James, who has been arrested for throwing a brick at a police officer during a queer rights protest. From dark comedy to deep vulnerability, directing his adrenaline, anxiety, fear, boredom, anger and sadness at his unconscious cellmate, whom he names ‘Tiberius’, James shares his journey to this point: His struggles with identity, pushing himself to excel as a child and closing himself off as an adult. When he is asked to a protest by George, an attractive artist, James intensely researches the topic to appear more knowledgeable and ‘get in his pants’. He becomes enthralled by ideas of protest and revolution, as he prepares himself for one final act of resistance.
‘surprising, incendiary and unsettling, written with a propulsive energy and sense of theatrical ambition’

‘wryly and playfully funny, and desperately sad… effortlessly engaging, with an exhilarating pace.’
