FLYING – Reading | Up Next Festival 2026

Friday 27th March

1:00pm

Flying is the story of Alan- a scouser who has let his life go beyond repair. His partner Elaine is in the process of leaving him, and their son Paul doesn’t even know that Alan is his father. One night, after a night of heavy drinking, Alan falls over in an alleyway- and doesn’t hit the ground.

He floats. At a certain level of intoxication, he can fly. Of course, no one believes him. Seeing this as his chance to make something of his life and win his family back, he sets out to prove his new ability to the world with the help of a young homeless lad named Frankie, and Bella- a Liver Bird.

The show is a fast paced and highly theatrical kitchen-sink comedy, with elements of magic realism. It’s a hopeful and moving story about coming together and deciding who you want to be. It’s a Liverpool story about the city’s past and present, with a question of what its future might hold.

The performance will be a reading of the first half of the show.
