Centred around the lives of brothers Billy and Tommy, My Little Brother Wasn’t Born to be Brainwashed is an exploration of family, social class and radicalisation.
In overcoming their father’s criminal deceit, Billy aims to provide his younger brother with the stability of a familial male role model, hoping to hold onto the life they’d known before their dad’s unexpected arrest. Yet when Tommy turns to war-based video games from the comfort of his bedroom, both find themselves on respective detrimental paths.
While Tommy’s enticement towards his new-found online community opens his eyes to a new perception of the world outside, warping his definitions of patriotism, pride and power, Billy’s uphill battle proves to only get steeper as he attempts to bring his little brother back down to reality.
But can reality be truly objective in a modern society whereby opinions, despite their ramifications, have no way of being censored?
“There’s a poetic rhythm to McLoughlin’s writing which, along with a great deal of raw humour, immediately engages the audience.”
