Lyric Writing For Theatre with Patrick Dineen | Creative’Pool Workshop

Tuesday 20th October

6-8pm

A workshp exploring the role of lyrics in theatre, and cabaret settings, and how they differ from day to day songs. We will listen to specific songs from well known composers and lyrics from Ebb and Kander (Cabaret): Brecht and Weill (Threepenny Opera), Sondreim (Sweeney Todd, Company) and esplore the relationship between the lyric and the melody, the choice of language to fit the character(singing as well as the function of the song, how is it moving the story forward. The workshop will have a strong emphasize on listening to the skill and artistry of the lyrics and to just enjoying the songs.

There will also be a hands on aspect where participants will be asked to write a part of a song to a given dramatic situation (a dark fairy tale for example). This workshop is designed for anyone, you do not need any specialist music skills, though an interest in music and theatre would obviously be a great asset. Have fun listening to great songs and look behind the lyric to find out what makes them so great.
